Every draft has a moment where you feel the running back room emptying out and something reptilian takes over.
The panic is partly justified and partly a trap, and the difference is measurable. Auto Draft Years took median points per game by positional draft tier and — this is the part that matters — sized the tiers to what a 12-team lineup actually starts: one quarterback, two backs, three receivers, one tight end. So quarterbacks and tight ends move in sixes, backs and receivers in twelves.
Do it that way and one position falls faster than everything else. How you should react to that is not what most drafts assume.
The cliff, measured in points
Running back scoring drops 51.2% across four starter tiers — from a median of 16 points per game in tier one to 7.8 in tier four. Nothing else on the board falls that fast.
Tight end drops 42%, receiver 36.7%, and quarterback is the flattest of all at 27% — 20.4 PPG down to 14.9. That is why the position feels urgent in a way quarterback never does: the gap between a good back and a replaceable one is a genuine points cliff, while the gap between a good quarterback and a streamable one is a speed bump.
The correction the data insisted on
An earlier, cruder version of this analysis showed an enormous tight end cliff. It was wrong, and the reason is instructive.
Using uniform six-player tiers compares TE25–36 — tight ends literally nobody starts — against RB25–36, who plenty of people start every week. Of course the tight end line collapses; you are measuring the drop into irrelevance rather than the drop between startable options. Size the tiers to a real lineup and the tight end decline is meaningful (42%) but not catastrophic, and running back takes back the title.

What this means for your draft
The urgency is real; the mandate is not. The cliff tells you the cost of ending up in the fourth tier is high. It does not tell you to reach past better players to avoid it — because, as the dead-zone piece in this series shows, similarly priced receivers often deliver more from the middle rounds on.
Draft the break, not the position. Identify the last back you would genuinely feel good starting. Make sure you have two of that calibre or better before the tier snaps. After that, the marginal back is frequently worse than the receiver sitting next to him at the same cost.
Let the flat curves wait. Quarterback loses 27% of its scoring across four tiers, which is another way of saying the tenth-best quarterback is close enough to the third that paying up early rarely clears the opportunity cost. Where I would be careful
Tiers are league-dependent. Start three receivers and a flex, or run half-PPR, and the baselines move — the running back cliff can steepen or soften. Superflex rewrites the quarterback line entirely by making the position scarce in a way standard leagues never see.
These are also medians. One elite late back can flatten your personal cliff by himself. Use the shape as a planning tool, not a script.
The bottom line
Running back value falls off the table faster than anything else, so secure the backs you trust before the tier breaks. Just do not confuse that urgency with permission to draft the position at any price — the cliff is a reason to plan, not a reason to reach.
