Every fantasy league eventually needs a guy.
Your friend's coworker. Someone's brother-in-law. The old college roommate who still owes $47 from a golf trip.
This year, you're the guy.
You said, “Yeah, I'll play.”
Now the draft is three days away and the group chat looks like a Bloomberg terminal run by men who watched The Big Short once.
Someone has a spreadsheet.
Someone else has completed 37 mock drafts.
A third person has announced that he is “all in” on a rookie wide receiver you have never heard of.
Relax.
You do not need to become one of these people.
In fact, that may help.
For this guide, we're assuming a normal one-quarterback PPR league. If your commissioner created some bizarre superflex dynasty auction league with defensive players, he's the problem, not you.
So What Are We Actually Doing?
Fantasy football is basically Madden except you don't control anybody.
You draft real NFL players.
They play actual football.
When they gain yards, catch passes and score touchdowns, you get imaginary points.
Your imaginary team plays another imaginary team.
Then grown men experience very real emotions.
Simple.
Here are the positions:
| Position | Beginner translation |
|---|---|
| QB | Throws the football. Usually start one. |
| RB | Runs with the ball. Extremely important. Constantly getting injured at the worst possible time. |
| WR | Catches passes. Also extremely important. |
| TE | Large receiver designed partly to test your patience. |
| FLEX | Usually another RB, WR or TE. |
| Bench | Players you own but aren't starting. |
| D/ST | An entire NFL defense counts as one thing. Don't think about it too hard. |
| K | Kicker. We'll deal with this later. |
The exact rules depend on your league.
Check them.
Joining a fantasy league without checking the settings is like agreeing to a bachelor party before finding out it's in Scottsdale and costs $2,800.
Details matter.
What the Hell Is PPR?
Point Per Reception.
Your player catches a pass?
He gets a point.
That's it.
You now understand PPR.
Fantasy football will attempt to make everything sound harder than this.
Do not let it.
Your Draft Strategy Can Be Embarrassingly Simple
As of August 23, the top five players in FantasyPros' current PPR consensus rankings are Ja'Marr Chase, Jahmyr Gibbs, Puka Nacua, Bijan Robinson and Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
Notice anything?
All running backs and wide receivers.
For your first draft, that's a pretty good clue.
Early in the draft, mostly take good RBs and WRs.
You do not need to discover some hidden loophole.
You do not need to prove everyone else wrong.
You definitely do not need to draft Patrick Mahomes fourth overall because Patrick Mahomes is the best football player whose name you recognize.
Quarterback is incredibly important in actual football.
Fantasy football is different.
FantasyPros' 2026 quarterback strategy makes the same basic case: in a one-QB league, plentiful usable options make it reasonable to spend down at the position.
Think of fantasy like building a Chipotle bowl.
You need the expensive protein first.
Quarterback can wait a little.
Don't Try to Fill Every Position Immediately
This bothers new players.
After three rounds your roster might say:
RB ✅
WR ✅
WR ✅
QB ❌
TE ❌
Your brain will tell you to fill the empty boxes.
Ignore it.
This isn't the character-select screen in Mario Kart.
You don't receive a bonus for collecting one of everything.
If another excellent running back or receiver is available, take him.
Your FLEX needs somebody.
Your bench needs good players.
Players get hurt.
Bye weeks happen.
And by approximately October, every fantasy roster begins looking a little like The Walking Dead: a few survivors wandering around while you desperately search for supplies.
What Is a Snake Draft?
Most leagues use one.
If you pick first in Round 1, you pick last in Round 2.
Then first in Round 3.
The order reverses every round.
Think of mowing your lawn:
Across, back, across. Like mowing the lawn—except your neighbor can steal Puka Nacua halfway across the yard.
Which brings us to an important moment.
Someone Will Draft the Player You Wanted
You've been waiting three picks.
He's almost there.
One more selection.
Then the guy directly before you takes him.
This will feel devastating.
For about six seconds.
Then draft somebody else.
Do not stare at the screen like Rockstar just delayed GTA VI again.
We've all waited long enough for GTA VI. You do not need to bring that same emotional baggage to Pick 46. Rockstar currently has the game scheduled for November 19, 2026.
There are other players.
Keep moving.
ADP: The One Acronym You Actually Need
ADP = Average Draft Position.
It tells you roughly where people are drafting someone.
Player ADP: 32.
Translation:
He usually goes around Pick 32.
That's all.
Think of ADP like Zillow.
It doesn't tell you what the house is truly worth.
It tells you what everyone currently seems willing to pay for it.
This distinction matters.
Our Auto Draft Years historical database contains 320 players drafted inside the top 20 from 2010 through 2025.
Only 58.8% ultimately finished as top-12 players at their positions.
And 28.4% missed at least four games.
These were the supposed safe guys.
Nearly three out of ten missed a month.
So when your league's resident fantasy expert announces that Pick 16 is “a lock,” you don't need to challenge him.
Just remember this game has spent decades putting people who say things like that into lockers.
ADP is useful.
It's not prophecy.
Please Wait on Kicker and Defense
You will recognize some kickers.
This creates danger.
You will be sitting in Round 8, see a famous kicker and think:
I know him.
Meanwhile, six running backs you've never heard of are sitting underneath him.
Take the running back.
Draft kicker and defense near the end.
Spending a valuable draft pick on a kicker because you recognize his name is like going to Costco for paper towels and coming home with a six-person kayak.
You accomplished something.
I'm just not sure it was today's objective.
Your Draft Is Not Your Team Forever
This is probably the most important concept in the entire article.
You can change your team.
Constantly.
Players you didn't draft will become valuable.
Players you did draft will become useless.
Welcome to the waiver wire.
The waiver wire is just all the useful players nobody currently owns.
Maybe a starting running back gets injured.
Maybe a rookie earns more playing time.
Maybe some guy nobody cared about suddenly gets nine targets.
You can add him.
Think of waivers as Facebook Marketplace for NFL players.
Most Tuesday mornings:
Backup WR. Lightly used. No serious offers.
Then suddenly:
STARTING RUNNING BACK.
18 TOUCHES LAST WEEK.
FREE.
MUST GO TODAY.
Now nine guys are interested.
Your job is to check waivers every week.
Trades: Four Mediocre Players Are Still Mediocre
Eventually somebody will offer you a trade.
You receive:
- WR31
- RB38
- WR46
- Backup tight end
He receives:
- Ja'Marr Chase
Then he'll text:
“Gives you a lot of depth.”
Correct.
So does owning 14 forks.
I'd still rather have one steak knife when I need a steak knife.
Remember the great 100 men versus one gorilla debate?
Fantasy managers conduct essentially the same experiment every year.
Four WR3s versus Ja'Marr Chase. Who wins?
Still the gorilla.
Don't trade elite players just because the other side made the offer physically larger.
Your Weekly Routine
This does not require 20 hours.
Check waivers. Look for players suddenly getting more opportunities.
See whether anyone on your team plays Thursday night.
Check injuries. If someone is OUT, remove him. If he is QUESTIONABLE, check the latest update.
Most ESPN leagues use individual player locks, meaning you can make a move until that player's scheduled kickoff. Commissioners can change it, so check your league's lineup-lock setting.
This five-minute check will already make you more competent than at least one manager in your league.
Every league has a guy who forgets.
Find him.
Cherish him.
Don't Lose Your Mind After Week 1
Your first-round pick will eventually score seven points.
This will annoy you.
Do nothing.
One football game is weird.
Sometimes great players have bad Sundays.
You waited almost 30 years for Happy Gilmore 2.
You can give your first-round running back two weeks.
The experienced managers in your league will tell you not to overreact.
Then five minutes later they'll send 63 messages about how a rookie's third-quarter snap percentage “might mean something.”
Fantasy football does this to people.
The Seven Terms You Need
Where someone usually gets drafted.
Player expected to outperform his draft price.
The opposite. Usually discussed with anger.
His NFL team isn't playing that week.
Available players you can add.
Rotating players at a position from week to week.
The backup to your important running back.
Yes.
We really call it that.
Nobody wants to revisit the decision.
The Secret Nobody Tells the New Guy
Everyone else does know more than you.
But they don't know what's going to happen.
Huge difference.
They've listened to podcasts.
They've studied depth charts.
They've read training-camp reports.
Somebody in your league has probably developed a concerning emotional attachment to a fourth-round rookie because he saw a 14-second practice clip on Twitter.
And then Sunday happens.
Football remains football.
Draft good running backs and receivers.
Don't panic if somebody takes your guy.
Wait on kicker and defense.
Check waivers.
Set your lineup.
Don't trade a dollar for four quarters just because the quarters came in a nice PowerPoint presentation.
Do those things and you'll be fine.
Then, sometime around Week 9, you'll beat the guy who ran 400 mock drafts and built his own projections.
Do not explain your strategy.
Do not gloat.
Do not mention that you forgot there was a Thursday game two weeks earlier.
Just send him the scoreboard.
You'll understand why.
The Short Version
- Early rounds: Mostly RB and WR.
- QB: Important, but you usually don't need one immediately in a normal one-QB league.
- Kicker/defense: Late.
- ADP: Use it as a price guide, not a prediction.
- Waivers: Check every week.
- Trades: Quality matters more than quantity.
- Sunday morning: Check injuries.
- Bad week: Don't immediately panic.
- Most important: Nobody knows nearly as much as they sound like they know.
