The back of the first round has a public relations problem.
Everyone in the league understands, in an abstract way, that the 12 slot gets two picks in a row and that this is supposed to be nice. Nobody actually believes it. The person who draws pick 12 spends the entire first round watching eleven players they liked come off the board, and by the time their turn arrives the double pick feels less like a reward and more like a receipt.
The data has a slightly better opinion of it than that.
Not a great opinion. A better one.
Where slot 12 actually lands
Pooling every player drafted within two ADP ranks of each of the six picks a slot owns, 2016 through 2025 — about fifty player-seasons per pick — slot 12's block of picks 12, 13, 36, 37, 60 and 61 returned 85.5 median PPG, with 2.24 expected top-12 finishes and 2.40 expected busts.
That is ninth of twelve.
It is also ahead of slot 9 (84.5), slot 10 (83.8) and slot 11 (84.0).
So the draft order does not degrade in a straight line. It sags through the back-middle and then recovers slightly at the very end. Pick 12 is worse than pick 5. It is better than pick 10.
The reason is entirely the turn.
The turn is real
Pick 12 returned 16.6 median PPG, a 56% top-12 rate and a 24% bust rate.
Pick 13 returned 16.4 median PPG, a 56% top-12 rate and a 24% bust rate.
Those are the same pick twice, which is exactly the point. No other slot gets two selections that closely matched in quality. Slot 1's pair at 24 and 25 comes in at 15.1 and 15.2 PPG with 50% and 52% top-12 rates — a full point and a half lower on both.
Slot 12's turn happens at the top of the second round instead of the bottom of it, and that difference is worth more than the eleven picks you gave up in Round 1.
Look at where Round 2 decays. Pick 13 returned 16.4 PPG. Pick 20 returned 17.8. Pick 24 returned 15.1. The tier that makes Round 2 valuable is largely intact through the high teens and gone by the mid-twenties. You are at the front of it. Slot 1 arrives after it has been cleared out.
Then the floor drops
Slot 12's advantage ends abruptly.
Your third and fourth picks land at 36 and 37, and they busted 46% and 42% of the time. Between pick 13 and pick 36 sit twenty-three selections, the longest gap in the draft, tied with slot 1.
So the structure of slot 12 is: two good picks, a very long wait, and then two picks in the worst-value stretch of a fantasy draft.
Round 3 running backs busted 43.2% of the time. Round 4 running backs busted 51.2%. Your 3.12 and 4.01 sit right on top of that, and both historically skewed running back — 44% and 46% of the players taken there.
That is the trap, and it is set by the turn itself.
Do not spend the turn on one position
Back-to-back picks feel like one double-sized selection. They are not.
They are two selections from the same board state. Nobody picks in between, which means you are not getting the best available player twice — you are getting the best available player and then the next one down, from a tier that has just been picked over by eleven other managers.
A double pick concentrates your options. It does not multiply them.
The instinct at 12 and 13 is to take two running backs, because the elite backs are visibly disappearing and you have one last chance to grab two. Resist it, for two reasons.
The first is that running back production is not concentrated where the market prices it. Only 34.2% of all top-12 running back seasons since 2016 came from players drafted in Round 1. The median top-12 running back cost pick 20.5.
The second is that Round 1 receivers busted 8.3% of the time and Round 1 running backs busted 24.6%, at nearly identical top-12 rates — 64.6% against 59.4%. The receiver is not the boring pick. He is the same pick with a third of the downside.
Take one of each at the turn, and let your 23-pick wait be a wait for depth rather than a wait for a position you failed to address.

At 13, one pick later: De'Von Achane (50%), Omarion Hampton (58%), Justin Jefferson (37%), Ashton Jeanty (34%).
The realistic version is that you land one of Jefferson, Jeanty or Achane at 12 and one of Achane, Hampton or Lamb at 13.
Achane is the name the board likes most in that group: 63.1 upside against a 20.1 risk score, the lowest in the top fifteen. Jefferson is the opposite — 51.9 upside against 50.0 risk, and the board ranks him a hair behind his market price, one of only a handful of top-12 players it does that to.
Round 3 and 4, picks 36 and 37. Zay Flowers (44% / 39%), Tee Higgins (61% / 56%), Tetairoa McMillan (50%), Emeka Egbuka (29%). The board has Egbuka four spots ahead of his market price with a 68.2 upside score — the best value-and-ceiling combination available at your turn.
Breece Hall (27%) and Javonte Williams (28%) are the running backs, and both are likely gone. Let them go. This is exactly the pick where the dead zone eats a season.
Round 5, pick 60. Joe Burrow, Tyler Warren, Luther Burden, Mike Evans are all in range.
Round 6, pick 61. Here is slot 12's genuine consolation prize.
Pick 61 returned a 21.8 PPG 90th percentile — the highest of any Round 6 selection, against 18.0 at pick 68 and 17.3 at pick 67. It also returned a 32% top-12 rate, the best in the round.
Sitting at the top of Round 6 means you get first look at the tier that has just reset. When the late round breaks somebody's way, it breaks a little harder from the back of the order.
Take the quarterback here
Quarterbacks drafted in Round 6 returned 18.7 median PPG with a 78.6% top-12 rate and a 7.1% bust rate. Round 5: 20.2 PPG, 19% bust. Round 4: 20.7 PPG and zero severe busts in eleven player-seasons.
Nearly 60% of all top-12 quarterback seasons since 2016 came from players drafted after Round 6. The median top-12 quarterback cost pick 91.
At pick 61 in 2026 the board still has Jalen Hurts, Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye and Joe Burrow in range, and it ranks both Williams and Hurts ahead of their market prices.
Slot 12 waits 23 picks twice. Quarterback is the position that makes waiting cost nothing. Use it.
The limits
Fifty player-seasons per pick over ten seasons is enough to see that the turn at 12 and 13 outperforms the turn at 24 and 25. It is not enough to declare that pick 36 is cursed and pick 35 is fine.
And the whole spread from the best slot to the worst is 7.6 median PPG across six picks. Slot 12 sits 5.9 below the top and 1.7 above the bottom. That is a nudge, not a verdict.
But the shape holds: you own the best matched pair in the draft and the two worst picks in your own block, separated by the longest wait anyone has.
Draft the pair well. Then be patient, and be very suspicious of running backs at 36 and 37.
