Pick 8 Is the First Slot That Has to Draft Differently

Below the first tier, above the turn, and holding two picks that are worth almost the same thing. Slot 8 is where copying the front of the room stops working.

The short version

  • Slot 8 returned 84.6 median PPG across its first six picks — tenth of twelve, and the point where the draft order genuinely starts costing you something.
  • Your first-round pick is fine on its own: 16.6 median PPG, a 64% top-12 rate and a 16% bust rate, lower than four of the six slots ahead of you.
  • The problem is that picks 8 and 17 returned 16.6 and 15.9 PPG. You own two second-round picks, and the rest of the block decays fast: 14.4, 13.8, 12.8, 11.1.
  • Every strategy that works at the front of the draft assumes a cornerstone. You do not have one. Build breadth instead.
  • Your turn is nine picks wide, which is the useful width — the board resets between selections without disappearing.
  • In 2026 that means Jonathan Taylor as a coin flip at 1.08, and a running-back-heavy board at 2.05 that you should mostly decline.

The front of the draft gets to have a philosophy.

Take the best player. Build around him. Everything else is support.

That philosophy works because it describes something true about picks 1 through 6, where the median return was between 18.3 and 18.8 points a game and the top-12 rate never dropped below 60%.

At pick 8 it describes nothing.

Where slot 8 lands

Pooling every player drafted within two ADP ranks of each pick a slot owns — roughly fifty player-seasons per pick, 2016 through 2025 — slot 8's block of picks 8, 17, 32, 41, 56 and 65 returned 84.6 median PPG, 2.22 expected top-12 finishes and 2.36 expected busts.

Tenth of twelve. The field runs from 91.4 down to 83.8.

So slot 8 is in the bottom group, and it is worth being precise about why, because the obvious answer is wrong.

Your first-round pick is not the problem

The 1.08 returned 16.6 median PPG with a 64% top-12 rate and a 16% severe bust rate.

That 16% is lower than picks 1 (23.3%), 2 (20%), 3 (20%), 9 (20%), 10 (22%), 11 (24%) and 12 (24%).

Seven of the twelve first-round slots busted more often than yours. The 64% top-12 rate is third-best in the round.

You are giving up about two points a game against the top of the draft, and getting back a cleaner downside. That is a fine trade and it is not where slot 8 loses.

The problem is that nothing after it is any better

Your first pick and your second pick are 0.7 apart. Six slots ahead of you post a bigger step down from selection one to selection two; slot 1's is 3.4 and slot 4's is 2.1.

Then it slides, and the bottom is bad. Pick 65 returned 11.1 median PPG with a 62% bust rate, the lowest median of any Round 6 selection.

Compare the shape to slot 5: 18.3, 17.8, 15.6, 14.0, 13.8, 11.9. Two premium picks and then a decline. Or slot 12: 16.6, 16.4, 14.4, 13.8, 12.2, 12.1 — a matched pair and then a decline.

Slot 8 gets one decent pick, one slightly worse pick, and then the decline starts immediately with nothing propping it up.

So build breadth, not a spine

This is the practical consequence, and it is the reason slot 8 is the first slot that has to draft differently.

The front of the room can afford to be positionally opinionated, because a cornerstone absorbs a mistake. If your 1.03 returns a top-3 season, a bad Round 4 does not sink you.

Slot 8 has no absorber. Which means:

Your two most important picks are 8 and 17, and they should be two positions, not one. Nine picks apart is the useful width — eight teams choose between your selections, the board genuinely resets, and your second pick is a new decision rather than the runner-up from the first.

You cannot afford a dead pick at 32 or 41. Picks 32 and 41 returned 14.4 and 13.8 median PPG with 36% bust rates each. That is not the dead zone yet, but it is the on-ramp.

Treat picks 56 and 65 as lottery tickets and price them accordingly. Pick 56 busted 58% of the time; pick 65 busted 62%. Nothing you do there is a plan.

The one position that fixes the back of your block

Quarterback.

Quarterbacks drafted in Round 4 returned 20.7 median PPG and busted zero times across eleven player-seasons. Round 5 quarterbacks returned 20.2 PPG with a 57.1% top-12 rate. Round 6 quarterbacks returned 18.7 PPG with a 78.6% top-12 rate and a 7.1% bust rate.

Nearly 60% of all top-12 quarterback seasons since 2016 came from players drafted after Round 6. The median top-12 quarterback cost pick 91.

Slot 8's worst two picks are 56 and 65, and they bust 58% and 62% of the time — at skill positions. Quarterback is the one position where the same picks return a top-12 season most of the time.

That is not a coincidence you can only observe. It is a lever. Slot 8 has two weak late picks and one position that makes weak late picks strong.

Round 1, pick 8. Jonathan Taylor is a coin flip at 50%. CeeDee Lamb (66%) and Justin Jefferson (76%) are likely there. Amon-Ra St. Brown (42%), Christian McCaffrey (34%), Jaxon Smith-Njigba (27%) and Puka Nacua (21%) need help.

The board's read on the likely group: Lamb at 62.4 upside against 45.0 risk; Jefferson at 51.9 against 50.0 — and the board ranks Jefferson one spot behind his market price, one of only a handful of top-12 players it treats that way. Taylor is 74.5 upside against 50.0 risk.

If St. Brown falls to you at 42%, take him. 79.1 upside against 36.5 risk is the best combination likely to be in range.

Round 2, pick 17. Read this list carefully: Drake London (50%), Brock Bowers (63%), Derrick Henry (55%), Saquon Barkley (42%), Chase Brown (34%), Omarion Hampton (27%), De'Von Achane (21%).

Five of the seven are running backs. This is the moment slot 8 gets tested.

Decline most of it. Round 2 running backs busted 20% of the time — that part is fine — but the pull here is to pair a Round 1 back with a Round 2 back and then spend Rounds 3 and 4 chasing the position further down, where it collapses.

Bowers at 63% is the pick I would want. The board flags tight end as "cliff now" at each of your first four picks, and slot 8 is close to the last seat where an elite tight end is available at market price.

Round 3, pick 32. Zay Flowers (67%), Breece Hall (58%), Javonte Williams (50%), Malik Nabers (43%), DeVonta Smith (40%).

Round 4, pick 41. Colston Loveland (60%), Cam Skattebo (43%), Tee Higgins (33%), Garrett Wilson (27%), Josh Jacobs (25%).

Round 5, pick 56. Joe Burrow (50%), Drake Maye (41%), TreVeyon Henderson (37%), David Montgomery (36%), Lamar Jackson (32%).

Round 6, pick 65. Christian Watson (43%), Carnell Tate (40%), Jadarian Price (39%), Mike Evans (30%), DJ Moore (25%), Joe Burrow (23%).

Take the quarterback at 56 if Burrow or Maye is there at a coin flip. Pick 65 is thin enough that you should not count on one surviving.

Stay out of the middle-round backfield

Round 3 running backs busted 43.2% of the time. Round 4: 51.2%. Round 5: 65.7%. Round 6: 62.5%.

Round 3 receivers busted 26.9%; Round 4 receivers 33.9% — roughly two-thirds the rate at comparable medians.

Your picks at 32 and 41 sit directly on that line, and slot 8 has the least margin of any slot in the top ten to absorb a wasted one.

Only 34.2% of top-12 running back seasons since 2016 came from Round 1, and the median top-12 back cost pick 20.5. The good backs are not where the market puts them, and the middle rounds are where people pay the most to guess.

The limits

Fifty player-seasons per pick over ten seasons shows the shape of slot 8's block clearly: no premium pick, an early decline, a weak tail. It does not prove that pick 41 is worse than pick 40.

And the whole best-to-worst spread is 7.6 median PPG across six picks. Slot 8 sits 6.8 below the top and 0.8 above the bottom — nearer the floor than the ceiling, and nowhere near disaster.

The finding worth keeping is the strategic one. Slot 8 is the first seat where copying the front of the room actively hurts you, because the front of the room is building around a player you do not have.
