Pick 9 Is a Turn Slot That Doesn't Get Paid Like One

Seven picks between your first two selections feels like a turn. It isn't one, and treating it like one is how slot 9 goes wrong.

The short version

  • Slot 9 returned 84.5 median PPG across its opening six picks, eleventh of twelve, with 2.42 expected busts.
  • Picks 9 and 16 arrive seven apart and returned 16.4 and 16.2 median PPG. They feel like a turn. They are not one.
  • A real turn gives you two picks from different board states. Seven picks apart, that is true — but both picks come from the same tier, which is what actually costs you.
  • The block breaks at picks 33 and 40: 40% and 38% bust rates, 34% and 24% top-12 rates, both sitting in the middle-round dead zone.
  • The fix is to make your first two picks two positions, and to spend picks 33 and 40 on receivers rather than running backs.
  • In 2026 that means Jonathan Taylor or CeeDee Lamb at 1.09, and a Round 2 board that is five-sevenths running back and should mostly be declined.

Slot 9 has a specific psychological hazard, and it is worth naming before any of the numbers.

You pick at 9. Then you pick at 16. Seven selections later.

That is fast enough that you never really leave the room. You take a player, six other managers take players, and you are up again before the group chat has finished reacting to your first pick.

It feels like a turn. It generates all the same instincts a turn generates — grab the pair, lock the position, get two while the getting is good.

And the two picks returned 16.4 and 16.2 median PPG, which is to say they are the same pick twice.

Eleventh of twelve

Pooling every player drafted within two ADP ranks of each pick a slot owns — roughly fifty player-seasons per pick, 2016 through 2025 — slot 9's block of picks 9, 16, 33, 40, 57 and 64 returned 84.5 median PPG, 2.24 expected top-12 finishes and 2.42 expected severe busts.

Eleventh of twelve on production. Second-most busts of any slot, behind only slot 10.

The field runs 91.4 down to 83.8, so slot 9 is 6.9 below the top and 0.7 above the bottom.

The first-round pick is not the issue

The 1.09 returned 16.4 median PPG, a 62% top-12 rate and a 20% bust rate.

That top-12 rate is higher than picks 10, 11 and 12, and level with the 1.01's 63.3%. The bust rate matches picks 2 and 3 exactly.

Round 1 is two plateaus with a step between them: picks 1–6 returned 18.3 to 18.8, picks 7–12 returned 16.1 to 16.6. You are on the lower plateau, and within it you are near the top.

Losing 2.1 points a game to the front of the draft is the cost of nine spots. It is not what makes slot 9 eleventh.

The middle is what makes it eleventh

Bust rates: 20%, 26%, 40%, 38%, 58%, 60%.

Top-12 rates: 62%, 56%, 34%, 24%, 24%, 24%.

Picks 33 and 40 are the damage. A 24% top-12 rate at pick 40 is among the lowest of any slot's fourth selection, and both picks sit inside the worst-value stretch of a fantasy draft.

Round 3 running backs busted 43.2% of the time. Round 4 running backs busted 51.2%. Slot 9 owns one pick in each.

What a turn actually gives you, and what it doesn't

This is the part that matters, so it is worth being careful.

A real back-to-back turn — the thing slots 1 and 12 have — is often worse than it looks. Two consecutive picks are two choices from the same board state, so you take the best available player and then the next one down out of a tier that was already picked over. The pair concentrates your options instead of multiplying them.

Seven picks apart, slot 9 avoids that specific problem. Six teams select between 9 and 16, so the board really does move.

What it does not avoid is the tier problem. Picks 9 and 16 sit in the same quality band — 16.4 and 16.2 PPG, 62% and 56% top-12. Whatever you take at 9, the player at 16 is roughly as good. There is no premium selection here that the second one supports.

So the pairing instinct is doubly wrong. You are not capturing a scarce tier before it goes — the tier is the same on both sides. And you are spending both of your best picks inside one position when you could have covered two.

Take two positions at 9 and 16. That is the entire strategic content of this slot.

Which two positions

Lean receiver at least once, and probably twice.

First-round wide receivers returned 18.6 median PPG with a 64.6% top-12 rate and an 8.3% severe bust rate. First-round running backs returned 16.6 PPG with a 59.4% top-12 rate and a 24.6% bust rate.

Higher median, higher elite rate, one-third the disasters — and the reason is structural. A receiver who loses target share still catches passes; a running back who loses goal-line work or splits a committee produces nothing.

Slot 9 carries 2.42 expected busts, second-most in the draft. It is the last slot that should be adding the position with the highest failure rate at the top of its board.

Round 1, pick 9. Justin Jefferson (69%), Ashton Jeanty (66%), CeeDee Lamb (58%) and Jonathan Taylor (42%) are the realistic group. Amon-Ra St. Brown (34%), Christian McCaffrey (27%) and Jaxon Smith-Njigba (21%) need help from the room.

The board's read: Lamb at 62.4 upside against 45.0 risk; Jefferson at 51.9 against 50.0, and the board ranks him a hair behind his market price, one of the few top-12 players it treats that way; Jeanty at 51.8 against 34.2.

If St. Brown reaches you at 34%, that is your pick — 79.1 upside against 36.5 risk is the best profile that could plausibly be there.

Round 2, pick 16. Brock Bowers (69%), Derrick Henry (59%), Drake London (58%), Saquon Barkley (50%), Chase Brown (42%), Omarion Hampton (34%), De'Von Achane (27%).

Five of seven are running backs. This is the pairing trap arriving exactly on schedule.

Bowers at 69% is the pick that breaks the pattern, and the board flags tight end as "cliff now" at every one of your first four selections — a rank gap of ten or more sits immediately behind the top of the position. London at 58% is the receiver version of the same idea.

Round 3, pick 33. Tee Higgins (76%), Zay Flowers (61%), Breece Hall (50%), Javonte Williams (44%), Malik Nabers (37%), DeVonta Smith (35%).

This is a 40%-bust pick. Take the receiver. Round 3 receivers busted 26.9% against 43.2% for backs.

Round 4, pick 40. Colston Loveland (66%), Cam Skattebo (50%), Tee Higgins (39%), Garrett Wilson (34%), Josh Jacobs (30%), Tetairoa McMillan (27%).

Round 5, pick 57. Tyler Warren (50%), Joe Burrow (47%), Luther Burden (43%), Drake Maye (38%), David Montgomery (33%).

Round 6, pick 64. Jadarian Price (44%), Mike Evans (32%), DJ Moore (28%), Joe Burrow (25%), Drake Maye (21%).

Take the quarterback at 57

Quarterbacks drafted in Round 5 returned 20.2 median PPG with a 57.1% top-12 rate. Round 6 quarterbacks returned 18.7 PPG with a 78.6% top-12 rate and a 7.1% bust rate. Round 4 quarterbacks returned 20.7 PPG and busted zero times in eleven player-seasons.

Nearly 60% of all top-12 quarterback seasons since 2016 came from players drafted after Round 6, and the median one cost pick 91.

Pick 57 busted 58% of the time at skill positions and pick 64 busted 60%. Those are bad picks for a receiver and good picks for a quarterback. Burrow at 47% and Maye at 38% are both live at 57; by 64 they are down to 25% and 21%.

Do not let it slide to 64 and then reach in Round 7 to fix it.

The limits

Fifty player-seasons per pick over ten seasons is enough to see that slot 9's middle is weak and its Round 1 pick is not. It is not enough to say pick 33 is worse than pick 32.

Some of what separates slot 9 from slot 5 is simply where the tier breaks landed in these particular ten seasons, and tiers move. In a year where the first tier runs ten deep instead of six, slot 9 looks a lot better.

The durable finding is behavioral, not statistical: a seven-pick gap creates the feeling of a turn without any of the tier advantage that would justify acting on it.

Pick two positions. Skip the middle-round backfield. Buy the quarterback late.
