The 1.01 Buys You a Player and a Problem

You get the best player in the draft and then you do not pick again for 23 selections. History says that trade is roughly a wash.

The short version

  • The 1.01 returned 18.5 median PPG with a 63.3% top-12 rate — but it busted 23.3% of the time, the highest severe bust rate in Round 1.
  • Slot 1's opening six picks ranked seventh of twelve at 87.4 median PPG. The best pick in the draft does not produce the best opening block.
  • The cost is the wait. Twenty-three picks pass before you choose again, and pick 24 returned the weakest second selection of any slot: 15.1 PPG, 50% top 12.
  • Your 2.12 and 3.01 arrive back-to-back. That pair is worth less than it feels, because you are choosing two players from the same picked-over tier.
  • The 1.01 has been a running back 70% of the time. First-round running backs busted 24.6% of the time; first-round receivers busted 8.3%.
  • In 2026 you have the entire board. The board's own preference is Jahmyr Gibbs; its highest-upside name is Christian McCaffrey, at nearly double the risk.

Winning the 1.01 feels like winning something.

The order gets posted, your name is at the top, and for about a day you are the person in the league who has already done well. People ask who you are taking. You say you have not decided, which is a lie, because you decided in June.

Then the draft starts, you take the best player in fantasy football, and you sit down.

And you keep sitting.

Twenty-three picks later, it is your turn again, and the tier you were planning to shop in has been gone for eleven minutes.

The 1.01 is not the safest pick

The first thing the history says about pick 1 is the thing nobody expects.

Across 2016 through 2025, the players drafted at 1.01 returned 18.5 median PPG with a 63.3% top-12 rate — and a 23.3% severe bust rate, the highest of any slot in the first round.

Pick 5 busted 8% of the time. Pick 4 busted 12%. Pick 6 busted 10%.

The first overall pick failed nearly three times as often as the fifth.

There is no mystery to it. The 1.01 has been a running back in 70% of those seasons, and first-round running backs busted 24.6% of the time against 8.3% for first-round wide receivers — at essentially the same top-12 rate, 59.4% against 64.6%.

The market puts a running back at 1.01 because the ceiling is real. It is. Running backs also get hurt, lose goal-line work, and split committees, and none of those things happen to a receiver in a way that erases his season.

You are not buying safety at 1.01. You are buying the widest good outcome available, with the widest bad one attached.

The wait is the actual cost

Pooling every player drafted within two ADP ranks of each pick a slot owns, roughly fifty player-seasons per pick, slot 1's six selections — picks 1, 24, 25, 48, 49 and 72 — returned 87.4 median PPG combined, with 2.55 expected top-12 finishes and 2.23 expected busts.

That is seventh of twelve.

Slot 5, which does not get anywhere near the best player, returned 91.4.

The reason is pick 24. It returned 15.1 median PPG and a 50% top-12 rate. That median is the lowest second selection any slot gets. Slot 5's second pick, at 20, returned 17.8 and 64%.

Four picks of difference. 2.7 points a game and fourteen points of elite rate.

Round 2 does not decay gently. It falls off a shelf somewhere after pick 20, and slot 1 is standing well past the edge of it.

The turn is worth less than it feels

Picks 24 and 25 arrive back-to-back. So do 48 and 49.

This is supposed to be compensation. Two picks in a row, nobody in between, take the two best players on the board.

The numbers do not really support the romance.

Pick 24 returned 15.1 PPG at a 50% top-12 rate. Pick 25 returned 15.2 at 52%. Together your entire Round 2 and Round 3 haul is what a slot in the middle gets from one strong pick and one ordinary one.

The reason is structural. Back-to-back picks are not two independent selections from a deep board — they are two selections from the same board state. You are not getting the best player available twice. You are getting the best player available and then the next one, out of a tier that twenty-two other selections just finished picking over.

A double pick concentrates your choices. It does not multiply them.

Which means the way to use 24 and 25 is not "two of the same position while the getting is good." It is two positions you would otherwise have to choose between.

Round 1, pick 1. There is no availability question. The entire board is yours, which is a nicer sentence than it is a decision.

The board's own order puts Jahmyr Gibbs first, at 78.0 upside against 32.5 risk. Bijan Robinson is second, with the top value score in the group at 83.5. Ja'Marr Chase and Puka Nacua are the receivers, at 73.4 and 76.8 upside with risk in the mid-30s.

Christian McCaffrey carries the highest upside score anywhere on the board at 88.9 — and a 65.0 risk score, roughly double everyone around him. That is the trade, stated plainly: he is the only player here with a genuinely different ceiling and the only one with a genuinely different chance of not finishing the season.

Given that slot 1 already carries the highest bust rate in Round 1, I would not add the highest-risk profile on top of it. The wait at pick 24 punishes you twice if the first pick fails — you lose the player, and you have no second early selection to cover it.

Round 2 and 3, picks 24 and 25. This is the compressed part of your draft. Nico Collins (54%), George Pickens (42%) and Kenneth Walker (31%) are realistic at 24; by 25 they are at 46%, 34% and 31%.

Watch the tight ends. Trey McBride (28%) and Brock Bowers (21%) are both likely gone before you pick, and the board flags tight end as "cliff now" at every one of your first four picks — meaning there is a rank gap of ten or more immediately behind the top of the position. Slot 1 is the slot most likely to miss the elite tight end entirely.

That is fine. Do not chase it. Only 15.8% of top-12 tight end seasons since 2016 came from players drafted inside the top 36, and 64.2% came from after Round 6. The median top-12 tight end cost pick 110.

Round 4 and 5, picks 48 and 49. Lamar Jackson (56%), Quinshon Judkins (42%), Davante Adams (41%), Terry McLaurin (38%), Jaylen Waddle (31%). The board's largest disagreements with the market live right here — Adams, Bucky Irving, McLaurin and Judkins are each ranked about five spots ahead of their ADP.

Round 6, pick 72. Quarterbacks. Jalen Hurts, Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels are all in range, and the board ranks Williams five spots ahead of his market price.

Take one there rather than at 48. Quarterbacks drafted in Round 6 returned 18.7 median PPG with a 78.6% top-12 rate and a 7.1% bust rate. Round 4 quarterbacks returned 20.7 PPG and busted zero times in eleven player-seasons. Nearly 60% of top-12 quarterback seasons came from players drafted after Round 6.

Quarterback is the one position where the wait is free. Slot 1 pays for waiting everywhere else. Take the discount where it exists.

What this does not mean

None of this is an argument to be unhappy about the 1.01.

You get the single best asset in the draft, uncontested, and the difference between the best opening block and the worst is 7.6 median PPG across six picks. Slot 1 sits in the middle of that range, not the bottom.

The sample is fifty player-seasons per pick over ten seasons — enough to show that pick 24 is a weak second selection, not enough to prove that pick 24 is uniquely doomed while pick 22 is safe.

And a good deal of the 1.01's bust rate is injury, which nobody forecasts in August.

But it does change what you should expect. Pick 1 does not buy you a head start on the field. It buys you one great player, one long wait, and a Round 2 that starts later than anyone else's.

Plan for the wait, and stop planning for the parade.
