Pick 2 Is Pick 1 Without the Tax

The highest median return in the first round belongs to the second pick, not the first. So does a shorter wait and a lower bust rate.

The short version

  • The 1.02 returned 18.8 median PPG, the highest figure in the first round, and busted 20% of the time against 23.3% at 1.01.
  • Slot 2's opening six picks returned 88.6 median PPG with 2.12 expected busts — better than slot 1 on both counts.
  • You give up the right to choose from an untouched board. You get back a slightly better historical outcome and a slightly shorter wait.
  • Your turn at 23 and 26 is three picks wide rather than one, which is a real advantage — it means the board changes between your selections.
  • The 1.02 has been a running back 72% of the time, the highest rate in Round 1. First-round backs busted 24.6% of the time; receivers busted 8.3%.
  • In 2026, Ja'Marr Chase at 58% and Puka Nacua at 66% are the receivers most likely to reach you.

There is a specific kind of misery reserved for pick 2.

You watch one player go. You know exactly which one, because you have known since June. And then you take the player you were always going to take, having briefly experienced the full emotional arc of a draft in which you were never actually making a decision.

Ten seasons of outcomes say you should be delighted.

The best pick in Round 1 is the second one

Median PPG by first-round slot, 2016 through 2025:

Pick 1: 18.5. Pick 2: 18.8. Pick 3: 18.5. Pick 4: 18.5. Pick 5: 18.3. Pick 6: 18.6.

The 1.02 tops the round.

It also busted less than the 1.01 — 20% against 23.3% — at a 62.5% top-12 rate against 63.3%.

None of these gaps are large. That is rather the point. The 1.01 and the 1.02 have returned the same thing, and the 1.02 has cost you nothing but the illusion of choice.

Whatever premium exists at the very top of a draft, it is not showing up in the outcomes.

Slot 2 beats slot 1 across the block

Pooling every player drafted within two ADP ranks of each pick a slot owns — roughly fifty player-seasons per pick — slot 2's selections at 2, 23, 26, 47, 50 and 71 returned 88.6 median PPG, 2.60 expected top-12 finishes and 2.12 expected busts.

Slot 1 returned 87.4, 2.55 and 2.23.

Better on all three, from one slot further back.

The mechanism is the wait. Slot 1 sits for 23 picks and then takes two players back-to-back at 24 and 25. Slot 2 sits for 21 and takes two players three apart, at 23 and 26.

Twenty-one is better than twenty-three. And three apart is meaningfully better than one apart.

Why three picks is better than one

Back-to-back selections feel like a bonus. They mostly are not.

Two consecutive picks are two choices made from the same board state. Nobody selects in between, so you are not getting the best available player twice — you are getting the best available and then the next one down, out of a tier that has just been picked clean.

Three picks apart is different. Three teams choose between your selections. The board moves. Two players you were weighing become one player you take and one player somebody else takes, and the second half of your turn is a genuine new decision rather than a continuation of the first.

That sounds like a downgrade. It is not, because the alternative is not "keep both" — it is "have both available and be forced to spend one of your two premium picks on the second-best of a group you had already exhausted."

The numbers agree, quietly. Pick 23 returned 15.4 median PPG with a 52% top-12 rate; pick 26 returned 15.2 and 50%. Slot 1's pair at 24 and 25 came in at 15.1/50% and 15.2/52%. Nearly identical outcomes — but slot 2 got there two picks earlier and with a live board in between.

The running back question

The 1.02 has been a running back in 72% of the last ten seasons — the highest rate of any first-round slot.

First-round running backs returned 16.6 median PPG with a 59.4% top-12 rate and a 24.6% severe bust rate.

First-round wide receivers returned 18.6 median PPG with a 64.6% top-12 rate and an 8.3% severe bust rate.

Higher median, higher elite rate, one-third the disasters.

That gap is not a claim that receivers are better players. It is a claim about failure modes. A running back who loses goal-line work or splits a committee produces almost nothing. A receiver who loses target share still catches passes. The floor is structurally different, and ten seasons of drafting have not priced it in.

At 1.02, where the market pushes a back at you 72% of the time, that is worth actively resisting.

Round 1, pick 2. Bijan Robinson is a coin flip at 50%; Jahmyr Gibbs is 42%. If you want a receiver, Ja'Marr Chase (58%), Puka Nacua (66%) and Jaxon Smith-Njigba (73%) are all more likely than not to reach you.

The board's own preference in that group is Robinson — the highest value score in the top ten at 83.5, against 72.4 upside and 32.1 risk. Nacua carries more upside at 76.8 with essentially the same risk.

Christian McCaffrey (79%) will almost certainly be there, and he carries the highest upside score on the entire board at 88.9 — with a 65.0 risk score, roughly double anyone near him. That is a legitimate swing. It is also the one profile that turns slot 2's modest structural edge into a coin flip on health.

Round 2 and 3, picks 23 and 26. Nico Collins (62% / 38%), George Pickens (50% / 27%), Kenneth Walker (43% / 26%), Jeremiyah Love (52%), Chris Olave (66%).

The tight ends are the live question. Trey McBride (34%) and Brock Bowers (26%) are both likely gone by 23, and the board flags tight end as "cliff now" at each of your first four picks — a rank gap of ten or more sits immediately behind the top of the position.

Let it go. Only 15.8% of top-12 tight end seasons since 2016 came from inside the top 36 picks, and 64.2% came from after Round 6. The median top-12 tight end cost pick 110.

Round 4 and 5, picks 47 and 50. Lamar Jackson (59% / 50%), Quinshon Judkins (50%), Davante Adams (46%), Terry McLaurin (42%), David Montgomery (57%). Four of the board's largest disagreements with the market sit in this exact window — Adams, Bucky Irving, McLaurin and Judkins are each ranked about five spots ahead of their ADP.

Round 6, pick 71. Jalen Hurts (43%), Caleb Williams (41%), Jayden Daniels (35%), Kyle Pitts (50%).

Wait on the quarterback

The single cleanest positional finding in the file: quarterbacks drafted in Round 4 returned 20.7 median PPG and busted zero times across eleven player-seasons. Round 5 quarterbacks returned 20.2 PPG. Round 6 quarterbacks returned 18.7 PPG with a 78.6% top-12 rate and a 7.1% bust rate.

Nearly 60% of all top-12 quarterback seasons since 2016 came from players drafted after Round 6.

Josh Allen will be available around pick 26 and he will look like the obvious move. The obvious move costs you a pick in the last round where elite skill-position talent is still on the board, to buy a position where the replacement is nearly free.

The limits

Fifty player-seasons per pick over ten seasons is enough to establish that the top of Round 1 is flat and that pick 2 has held up as well as pick 1. It is not enough to prove the 1.02 is better than the 1.01 — a 0.3 PPG gap and three points of bust rate is well inside the noise.

The honest version is: they are the same pick, and slot 2 gets a marginally better block behind it.

Which is more than enough reason to stop being annoyed about it.
