Pick 7 Is Where Round 1 Stops Being Special

The biggest single drop in the first round happens between pick 6 and pick 7. After that, your first-round pick and your second-round pick are almost the same thing.

The short version

  • Round 1 is flat from pick 1 through pick 6 — all six inside an 0.5 PPG band — and then it drops. Pick 6 returned 18.6 median PPG; pick 7 returned 16.4.
  • That step is the largest in the round and it is where the first tier ends.
  • Your first two picks returned 16.4 and 16.2 median PPG. Functionally you own two second-round picks, not a first and a second.
  • That is not a disaster. It changes what the picks are for: two solid starters instead of one cornerstone and a complement.
  • The 1.07 is the only first-round slot with an even RB/WR split — 48% each. Given that first-round receivers busted 8.3% against 24.6% for backs, lean receiver.
  • In 2026, Amon-Ra St. Brown is a coin flip at 1.07 and Brock Bowers is a coin flip at 2.06.

There is a moment in every draft where the room changes temperature.

Six picks in, the names being called are the ones everybody agreed on in June. Then somebody at pick 7 takes about ninety seconds instead of nine, and you can feel it: the part where you were choosing between great players has ended, and the part where you are choosing between good ones has started.

Ten seasons of outcomes put that moment in a specific place.

It is pick 7.

The step

Median PPG by first-round slot, 2016 through 2025, roughly fifty player-seasons per pick:

Pick 1: 18.5. Pick 2: 18.8. Pick 3: 18.5. Pick 4: 18.5. Pick 5: 18.3. Pick 6: 18.6.

Pick 7: 16.4.

Pick 8: 16.6. Pick 9: 16.4. Pick 10: 16.1. Pick 11: 16.1. Pick 12: 16.6.

Two clean plateaus and one step between them.

The first six picks live inside a 0.5-point band. The last six live inside a 0.5-point band. The gap between the bands is 2.2 points a game, and it happens entirely between pick 6 and pick 7.

That is the first tier ending. Not gradually. At a specific pick, which happens to be yours.

Your first two picks are the same pick

Here is what that does to slot 7's shape.

Pick 7 returned 16.4 median PPG with a 62% top-12 rate and a 14% bust rate.

Pick 18 — your second selection — returned 16.2 median PPG with a 56% top-12 rate and a 26% bust rate.

Two-tenths of a point apart on median production.

Every slot ahead of you owns a first-round pick that is meaningfully better than its second-round pick. Slot 1's gap is 3.4 PPG. Slot 4's is 2.1. Slot 6's is 2.0.

Slot 7's gap is 0.2.

You do not have a cornerstone and a complement. You have two very similar players, arriving eleven picks apart.

What that changes

Two things, and they point the same direction.

Stop looking for the guy your draft is built around. He is not at pick 7. The player available there has historically returned what a good early-second-round pick returns. If you spend the pick trying to find a first-round-caliber season, you will end up reaching for the highest-variance profile on the board, which is exactly how a 14% bust rate becomes a 25% one.

Start treating picks 7 and 18 as a matched pair. Slot 7's cadence is 11, 13, 11, 13, 11 — the second-smoothest in the draft after slot 6. You are never gone long. That means you can plan across your first two picks instead of within each one, and take two positions rather than the best of one.

The block adds up to 86.1 median PPG, 2.34 expected top-12 finishes and 2.18 expected busts — seventh of twelve, in a field running from 91.4 to 83.8. Middling. Not a problem.

The balanced-slot advantage

The 1.07 is the only first-round slot with an even positional split: 48% running back, 48% wide receiver, across ten seasons.

Picks 1 and 2 were running backs 70% and 72% of the time. Pick 3 was 64%. Pick 8 was 58%.

Slot 7 is where the market genuinely stops knowing what it wants, and that is useful, because it means the choice is actually yours rather than made for you by consensus.

Make it toward receiver.

First-round wide receivers returned 18.6 median PPG with a 64.6% top-12 rate and an 8.3% severe bust rate. First-round running backs returned 16.6 PPG with a 59.4% top-12 rate and a 24.6% severe bust rate.

Higher median, higher elite rate, one-third the disasters.

The reason is failure modes, not talent. A receiver who loses target share still catches passes. A running back who loses goal-line work or splits a committee produces close to nothing. Ten years of drafting has not priced that difference in.

Round 1, pick 7. Amon-Ra St. Brown is a coin flip at 50%, Jonathan Taylor (58%) is likelier than not, and Christian McCaffrey (42%), Jaxon Smith-Njigba (34%), Puka Nacua (27%) and Ja'Marr Chase (21%) all need someone ahead of you to pass.

St. Brown is the board's pick of that group on balance: 79.1 upside against 36.5 risk. McCaffrey has the highest upside score anywhere at 88.9, with a 65.0 risk score roughly double everyone near him. Taylor is 74.5 against 50.0.

Round 2, pick 18. Brock Bowers (56%), Derrick Henry (50%), Drake London (42%), Saquon Barkley (35%), Chase Brown (27%), Omarion Hampton (21%).

Bowers at a coin flip is the most interesting thing on your board. The app flags tight end as "cliff now" at every one of your first four picks — a rank gap of ten or more sits immediately behind the top of the position — and slot 7 is one of the last seats where an elite tight end is reachable at market price.

If you do not get one, do not chase later. Only 15.8% of top-12 tight end seasons since 2016 came from inside the top 36 picks; 64.2% came from after Round 6, and the median top-12 tight end cost pick 110.

Round 3, pick 31. Breece Hall (66%), Malik Nabers (50%), DeVonta Smith (45%), Kyren Williams (34%), Chris Olave (27%), Josh Allen (23%).

Round 4, pick 42. Colston Loveland (54%), Travis Etienne (44%), Cam Skattebo (37%), Tee Higgins (28%), Josh Jacobs (22%), Garrett Wilson (21%).

Round 5, pick 55. Quarterbacks and the deep running back tier — Drake Maye, TreVeyon Henderson, Joe Burrow, David Montgomery are all in range.

Round 6, pick 66. The single weakest window in your block, and the one where slot 7 shares the bottom of Round 6 with slot 6. Pick 66 returned 11.4 median PPG with a 60% bust rate and a 20% top-12 rate — the second-lowest elite rate of any pick in the first six rounds, behind only pick 72.

Two rules for the middle

Do not buy a running back at 31 or 42.

Round 3 running backs busted 43.2% of the time. Round 4 running backs busted 51.2%. Round 5: 65.7%. Round 6: 62.5%.

Over the same window, Round 3 receivers busted 26.9% and Round 4 receivers 33.9%, at comparable medians.

And the supply argument closes it: only 34.2% of top-12 running back seasons came from Round 1, and the median top-12 back cost pick 20.5. The good running back seasons are not concentrated where the market prices them, and the middle rounds are where people pay the most to guess.

Do buy the quarterback at 66.

Quarterbacks drafted in Round 6 returned 18.7 median PPG with a 78.6% top-12 rate and a 7.1% bust rate. Round 5: 20.2 PPG. Round 4: 20.7 PPG and zero severe busts in eleven player-seasons.

Nearly 60% of top-12 quarterback seasons since 2016 came from after Round 6.

Pick 66 is the worst skill-position selection in your entire block and one of the best quarterback selections in the draft. That is not a contradiction — it is the same fact seen from two positions.

The limits

The step from 18.6 to 16.4 between picks 6 and 7 is the cleanest structural break in the dataset, and it is still fifty player-seasons on each side. Where exactly the first tier ends moves year to year — in a season with eight consensus elite players it ends at pick 8, and slot 7 looks completely different.

What does not move is the principle. Somewhere in the middle of Round 1 the tier ends, and the slot that sits on the boundary should draft like a slot with two second-round picks rather than one first-rounder it has to justify.
